Tartan Mews is a small street in the rain. The check is woven rather than printed — warp first, weft second, each thread waiting for the last to dry — and between the checks sit sage, cream, a scroll drawn in one stroke, buttons with real holes in them, and three cats who have found somewhere dry to sit.

Each set of ten is composed as a single gesture across the hand:

  • The Woven Check — four tips · Warp then weft, every thread cured before the next crosses it
  • The Sitting Cats — three tips · Modelled solid, then given their eyes with the point of a pin
  • Buttons & Scroll — three tips · Holes pressed while the clay is soft, and one scroll in a single stroke

Sculpted from premium soft-gel resin — light on the nail, resilient at the edge — and finished with a triple-milled, high-gloss gel top coat cured in three passes for a lacquered, glass-like depth. Pigments and coatings are cruelty-free; metallic accents, leaf and ornament are applied entirely by hand and sealed beneath the final coat.

  • 10 hand-crafted tips, arranged by finger in a crystal presentation case
  • 10 sheets of jelly gel adhesive tabs
  • Manicure stick & nail file
  • 2 alcohol wipe pads
  • Instruction guide

The Story

Woven,
not printed

A printed tartan is a picture of cloth. A woven one is cloth. The atelier draws the warp first — every vertical thread, in order, thin to thick — cures it, and only then lays the weft across it, so at each crossing the second thread genuinely passes over the first and casts the hairline shadow that cloth casts. It is four times the work of drawing a grid, and it is the only reason the set reads as wool at arm’s length.

The cats are modelled solid rather than pressed from a mould, which is why the three on a set sit differently — one upright, one folded, one halfway to leaving. Their eyes are the last thing: two touches with the point of a pin, placed slightly off centre, because a cat looking straight at you is a toy and a cat looking just past you is a cat. The buttons have their holes pressed while the clay is still soft so the rims lift the way a real button’s do, and the scroll on the sage tip is one stroke — begun at the tail, thickened through the belly, lifted at the head.

A cat looking straight at you is a toy.

The Composition

Thread, button,
and cat

Ten tips of a wet back street — a check that is genuinely woven, buttons with real holes, and three cats who all sit differently.

i.

The Woven Check

Four tips

Warp cured before the weft crosses it, so every thread casts the hairline shadow that cloth casts.

ii.

Sage & Scroll

Three tips

A greyed sage under one unbroken stroke — begun at the tail, thickened through the belly, lifted at the head.

iii.

The Milk-Tea Bed

Three tips

The ground the street is built on: a nude warmed with a drop of the same brown used for the check.

With the brush-on adhesive and careful preparation, each application can last up to fourteen days. With fresh jelly gel tabs, each application typically lasts three to five days. After gentle removal, clean away any adhesive residue and return Tartan Mews to its coffret — the set is designed to be worn again and again. The protective gel top coat helps preserve the hand-crafted finish between wears.

Each Tartan Mews is made once, in a single size — there is no size to choose. Measure the widest point of your thumbnail in millimetres, then write to Client Care with that figure and we will confirm whether this set will sit flush before you order. Because exchanges require items to remain unused and in their original condition, please confirm before opening the set.

Yes. The soft-gel resin used for Tartan Mews files beautifully. Shape the free edge with the nail file in one direction only, before application. We suggest leaving the cuticle edge untouched, as it is contoured to sit flush against the skin.

When applied and removed as directed, the tabs and glue used with Tartan Mews should not damage your natural nails. Soak, ease from the side and never pry; careful application and gentle removal help protect the natural nail surface, wear after wear.

Because it should. Every Tartan Mews set is crafted by hand by a single artisan — the drift of the pigment, the depth of the glaze and the placement of each crafted detail are unique to your coffret. The photographs show one interpretation; yours is another. This is the nature, and the point, of the work.

Tartan Mews is carefully packed to arrive in pristine condition. Physical items may be exchanged within 30 days only when unused and in their original condition; gift cards are non-returnable.
